Sunset Strip Music Fest Returns as ‘Live on Sunset’

Sheryl Crow headlines Nov. 14 event, reviving WeHo’s beloved Sunset Strip Music Festival & bringing major live music back to the boulevard.

Admittedly, it can be disheartening to watch California and Los Angeles get dissed daily in the international media. And no, I don’t have my head in the sand. L.A. and West Hollywood have changed considerably over the past few years, and the city isn’t quite the carefree, anything-can-happen party destination it was a decade ago.

But here’s the thing: L.A. is still an extraordinary place to live.

L.A. CONFIDENTIAL: Sheryl Crow has performed at WeHo clubs like the Troubadour over the course of her career, including for live recordings like “Halfway There.”

Where else can you enjoy spectacular weather all year, meet fascinating people from around the world, and stumble upon an unforgettable concert or street festival without leaving the city or even your own neighborhood?

Case in point: the return of the Sunset Strip Music Festival (SSMF), now reimagined as Live on Sunset.

SAINTS OF LOS ANGELES: Motley Crue’s Vince Neil and Tommy Lee face the cameras at the Sunset Strip’s House of Blues during an event for the 2011 Sunset Strip Music Festival.

On Saturday, November 14, the new concert experience will bring major musical performances back to Sunset Boulevard, reviving the event that once transformed West Hollywood’s legendary rock ‘n’ roll corridor into an enormous outdoor party.

Live on Sunset: November 14

Sheryl Crow may know a thing or two about having fun until the sun comes up over Santa Monica Boulevard, but on November 14, the Grammy-winning singer-songwriter is heading north to Sunset Boulevard to headline Live on Sunset, a new iteration of the beloved Sunset Strip Music Festival.

The event will take place between Doheny Drive and San Vicente Boulevard, 4-11 p.m. and include an all-day lineup of musical acts, including Local Natives, Empress Of, Grace Bowers, Doug Locke, and DJ Mia Moretti.

Admission is free, but you must register at LiveOnSunsetWeHo.com.

Longtime West Hollywood residents will remember when the original festival brought major artists—including Ozzy Osbourne , Mötley Crüe, and Linkin Park—to the Strip for a celebration of the neighborhood’s remarkable musical history. The event became a signature West Hollywood attraction before its run ended in 2017.

SOMEWHERE THEY BELONG: SoCal arena rockers Linkin Park rocking WeHo at SSMF in 2013.

Now, Live on Sunset brings that festival back in a new format, giving music fans another opportunity to experience live performances on one of the world’s most famous boulevards. Plus, this time around the event is free to the public!

“The Sunset Strip is one of the most legendary music destinations in the world, and Live On Sunset is an opportunity to celebrate that extraordinary legacy while creating an exciting new chapter,” says West Hollywood Mayor John Heilman.

“For generations, artists, musicians, and fans have come to the Sunset Strip to experience something they couldn’t find anywhere else,” he adds. “We’re thrilled to bring live music out onto Sunset Boulevard and invite everyone to experience the energy, creativity, and unmistakable spirit that continue to make the Sunset Strip such an important part of culture.”

And what better way to launch this next chapter than with Sheryl Crow? Her catalog, spanning the sun-soaked sing-alongs “All I Wanna Do” and “Soak Up the Sun” to the blistering blues-rock of “My Favorite Mistake,” is practically tailor-made for a SoCal afternoon.

The event will take place from 4 to 11 p.m. along Sunset Boulevard, between Doheny Drive and San Vicente Boulevard. Admission is free with registration, and additional performers and attractions make this a compelling reason to get out and enjoy West Hollywood this fall.

The Party Never Really Stops in L.A.

‘ULTIMATE’ RUSH: A random shot from the Whisy A Go-Go’s monthly “Ultimate Jam Night.”

Let’s be honest: November is a pretty good time to be in Los Angeles.

While much of the country is bundling up for winter, we can be standing on Sunset Boulevard, singing along to Sheryl Crow and wondering why anyone would willingly live somewhere that requires scraping ice off a windshield.

SUNSET STRIP SALUTE: Roxy on Sunset pays respect to Eddie Van Halen in 2020.

For all its challenges, L.A. continues to offer experiences that are difficult to replicate anywhere else. Our music history, our neighborhoods, our diverse mix of people and our outdoor lifestyle remain reasons to celebrate.

And when it comes to keeping the history and spirit of rock and roll alive, we have to give to give props to people who continue to welcome this energy–from the City of West Hollywood to the owners of the Whisky A Go-Go, Roxy, and legendary Rainbow. Whether it’s giving props to a late rock legend on a marquee, or hosting a tribute night to a music icon, these venues have always unshakably supported live rock-and-roll music.

So, here’s to Live on Sunset, the return of a major music event that West Hollywood has been missing. The world can keep complaining about Los Angeles. We’ll be busy enjoying it.

See you on Sunset.

SOUNDS OF SABBATH

RAINBOW

Return of Rainbow’s ‘Backyard Bash’ brought classic metal back home to the Sunset Strip.

It’s been a hell of a wait but on Sept. 5, the Rainbow Bar and Grill welcomed back all the heavy metal you could handle with the triumphant return of its annual “Backyard Bash,” an all-day live concert event featuring national and local bands cranking out heavy metal hits in the parking lot behind the Roxy and Rainbow.

GUN CONTROL

Hollywood Roses

Hollywood Roses Revisits Guns N’ Roses at Whisky, Feb. 14

hollywood-roses-axl

Sure, on Valentine’s Day, you can always do the usual wine and roses thing with your better half.

However, we have a much better suggestion: the Night Train and Roses thing!

On February 14, toast the evening with some Night Train while getting your faces rocked off by the sounds of Hollywood hit-makers Guns N’ Roses at local faves Hollywood Roses‘ headlining gig at the world-famous Whisky A Go-Go!

The Whisky is located in the heart of the Strip’s Rock Row at 8901 Sunset Boulevard at Clark Street. Get more details and tickets for Hollywood Roses’ Valentine’s Day show here.

But don’t blame us if the date starts to feel a little uncomfortable should the band break out “Used to Love Her”!

DETROIT ROCK CITY

METALLICA REVEALS SITE OF ORION FEST

Generally, when it comes to Metallica, we’d travel anywhere they may roam to see the iconic metal monsters rock a stage…but Detroit?! Um…WTH?!?

On Thursday, Dec. 20, the band revealed a few more details about its second official Orion Music + More festival, the two-day event that debuted  last June in Atlantic City and featured ‘tallica headlining both nights.

james-hetfieldOrion 2013 is set for June 8 and 9. However, unlike other major rock fests like Indio, California’s Coachella and Chicago’s Lollapalooza, Orion is heading out on the road and shifting locations to the Motor City.

“More information will be coming on this exciting partnership with one of the most unique cities in the country – Detroit,” writes the band in its announcement.

Now, we realize that the East Coast is still recovering from hurricane Sandy, and we’re not trying to diss Detroit or anything but…the Motor City could certainly use some help in the PR department. Leading thousands of metal fans into such risky — from what we gather from news headlines — territory is a bit unusual. So, unfortunately, we’re gonna sit this one out and instead look forward to the (potential) Rolling Stones gig at Coachella 2013 in April!

Meet The Kavanaghs

AFTER STEALING THE SPOTLIGHT AT CULTURE COLLIDE, ARGENTINA’S THE KAVANAGHS ARE SET TO ROCK THE WHISKY OCTOBER 13

So, what do four guys from Argentina who were raised on equal parts Beatles, Beach Boys and Badfinger know about playing authentic powerhouse British and American rock?

Well, as Rosario-based band The Kavanaghs proved at L.A.’s Culture Collide music fest this past weekend, a helluva lot!

In fact, when it comes to music, these guys speak the language loud and clear, effortlessly infusing Sixties Brit and American classic rock stylings around memorable original English-language songs that reinvent contemporary rock and roll without disrespecting its past.

The quartet was part of Culture Collide’s four-day (Oct. 4-7) multi-bill lineup of some of the best new bands from around the world. And all that global creative energy and vast array of music styles combusted in an amp-shaking showcase of great sets by an eclectic mix of artists that included Sweden’s Icona Pop, Britain’s The Wombats, Poland’s Coldair and New Orleans’ Royal Teeth, which had the parking lot packed and jumping along to its groovy set.

However, it was The Kavanaghs’ rockin’ show on Sunday that won the weekend.

The band — frontman/bassist Tiago Galindez, drummer Sebastian Cairo and guitarists Alejandro Pin and Diego Vazquez — ripped through a tight set of tunes from its first two albums, including the stellar summer release Love Conquers Pain.

The cool rush of fast and furious tracks like “That’s All You Need to Know,” the badass Beatles-esque anthem “Friday On My Mind” and the addictive “Need a Pity Day” filled the room at Taix with a steady stream of curious indie-music fans that danced and nodded their heads straight through to the stellar set closer, “Tonight,” the first single from Love.

Los Angeles rock fans get another opportunity to catch the band’s killer live show, at the world-famous Whisky A Go-Go on October 13, before the band heads back to Argentina to record its next album.

Cinderella to Shake O.C.

Cinderella

L.A. TIMES SUMMER CONCERT SERIES AT O.C. FAIR INCLUDES DYNAMITE DOUBLE BILL WITH CINDERELLA & SEB BACH, AUG. 3

Cinderella and ex-Skidrow screamer Sebastian Bach are bringing the metal to the Orange County Fair’s Los Angeles Times Summer Concert Series, which kicks off July 13 and runs through August 12 at the Pacific Amphitheatre in Costa Mesa. The bands’ double-headliner bill on August 3 is the hardest rocking and best option in the series – although Heart, on August 9, and Weird Al Yankovich, on August 12, are also sure to be great shows.

Sebastian BachFollowing various member changes over the years, the current incarnation of Cinderella is the original killer quartet – frontman Tom Kiefer, drummer Fred Courey, bassist Eric Brittingham and shredder Jeff LaBar – that rocked the ’80s and ’90s with arena anthems and ballsy power ballads like “Shake Me,” “Nobody’s Fool” and “The More Things Change.”

Cinderella, which celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2011, hasn’t had a new studio album since 1994’s Still Climbing, so expect the O.C. gig to be a hits-packed show.

Bach (right) is sure to rock Skidrow classics like “Youth Gone Wild” and “I Remember You” along with tunes from his very hot and heavy latest solo release Kicking and Screaming.

Marilyn Manson Bringing ‘Dope Show’ to SSMF

MARILYN MANSON, OFFSPRING TO HEADLINE SUNSET STRIP MUSIC FEST!

If you’ve attended the past Sunset Strip Music Festivals you know how awesome it was seeing Motley Crue, Ozzy, Slash and Smashing Pumpkins rock the Sunset Strip. But now comes news of something even more stellar: Marilyn Manson has been announced as this year’s headliner! Plus, Orange Country rockers The Offspring are also on the bill, along with a tribute to iconic L.A. band The Doors!

Bad ReligionAnd just when you think the lineup couldn’t get any better…badass L.A. rockers Bad Religion (right) are also scheduled to bring the band’s timeless classics to the Strip! This is quickly shaping up to be SSMF’s most incredible lineup yet.

See all you headbangers at the fest! Stay tuned to SunsetandClark.com for more details as they unfold!

Putting on the LP

LINKIN PARK & INCUBUS TO HEAT UP SUMMER WITH CO-HEADLINING TOUR

Two great L.A. bands are teaming up for what’s sure to be summer’s hottest tour. Agoura Hills rockers Linkin Park and Calabassas hit-makers Incubus are heading out on the road together, with New Orleans’ rockers Mutemath opening the shows. The U.S. leg of the tour with Incubus kicks off August 14 in Mansfield, MA (LP plays earlier U.S. dates but without Incubus).

Strangely enough, the bands have not yet announced a home show in L.A. at Staples, Gibson or the Forum. The closest stop is Carson’s Home Depot Center on September 9. They also play Chula Vista’s Cricket Wireless Amphitheatre on September 10.

The LP/Incubus tour comes to the Bay Area on September 7 to rock the Shoreline Amphitheatre. With tickets between $30 and $125 for the tiny venue in Mountain View, located  just outside of San Francisco, there’s no reason not to hit up this awesome double-headliner bill.

Incubus will be cranking classics and new tunes from its latest release If Not Now, When? and Linkin Park will be hyping its hotly anticipated new album Living Things, which includes the killer first single “Burn it Down” and drops June 26.

Get deets and tix to the Sept. 7  Shoreline show here.

Jett Set Summer

JOAN JETT & METALACHI TO SHAKE UP SAN DIEGO COUNTY FAIR

The San Diego County Fair gives locals two good reasons to endure a month of artery-clogging comfort food and drunk, sweaty crowds hurling chunks over the sides of carnival rides at the Del Mar Fairgrounds.

The first: Rock goddess Joan Jett and her Black Hearts are headlining the main stage on June 19. It’s impossible to ever tire of hearing the badass ex-Runaways rocker crank out timeless classics like “Bad Reputation,” “Crimson and Clover,” “Little Liar,” “I Love Rock n’ Roll,” and “Do You Wanna Touch Me?”

Second: Hollywood band Metalachi (below) is set to rock the Fair on June 30 with its awesome and hilarious metal-mariachi covers of classics by Ozzy, Metallica, Zeppelin and other iconic monsters of rock.

Plus: The annual event is also hosting a good number of cool cover bands, including Led Zepagain, Thunder Road‘s salute to Bruce Springsteen, The Ultimate Stones‘ take on the honkey tonk blues of Mick Jagger and the boys and Wild Child‘s tribute to legendary L.A. band The Doors. And a Pink Floyd laser show is sure to give stoned attendees a bigger thrill than the Tilt-a-Whirl.

Check out the concert lineup and get set to rock!

A (Rockin’) Day in the Park

METALLICA, FOO FIGHTERS TO ROCK SF’S OUTSIDE LANDS FEST

What could be better than seeing Metallica (above) crank it to 11 and rock the leaves off the trees in Golden Gate Park on a cool summer night under the stars? How about if Foo Fighters (below), Jack White, Neil Young and Beck are also on the bill?!

That fantasy lineup becomes reality Aug. 10-12 when San Francisco’s fifth annual Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival turns the huge lawn area in the heart of the city’s famous park into a giant rock arena!

Considering that meh bands like Muse and Phish were among recent past headliners, this is clearly the hottest lineup in the music fest’s history. (Although Pearl Jam‘s ’09 set totally rocked!) And at a little over $200, tickets for the three-day event are very reasonable.

Music legends Stevie Wonder and Neil Young, Scottish “Take Me Out” hit-makers Franz Ferdinand and Brit indie faves Bloc Party are also in the music mix of over 50 bands that are set to play Outside Lands this summer! Check out the full lineup here, and get more details at  Outside Lands’ site.

Coachella can have its Tupac holograms. We’re definitely hitting up Outside Lands with the very real Metallica!
