30 YEARS OF ‘DOOM’

flotsam-and-jetsamFLOTSAM & JETSAM CELEBRATE THREE DECADES OF DOOMSDAY, NOV. 5 AT WHISKY A GO-GO

doomsdayMetallica‘s ex-bassist Jason Newstead‘s old band Flotsam and Jetsom is bringing its manic metal anthems to the Whisky A Go-Go on Nov. 5 . The metal stalwarts have just returned from a European tour and are promoting F&J’s self-titled 12th studio album, which was released last spring.

But even decades later, the Newstead-era “Hammerhead” and “She Took an Axe” from Flotsam’s 1986 debut, Doomsday for the Deceiver, and “Wading Through the Darkness” and F&J’s cover of Elton John‘s “Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting,” from 1988’s breakthrough album Cuatro, are still as blistering and badass as they come.

flotsam-and-jetsam-drummer-jason-bittner“We are very excited to get out with this package and thrash through the United States, playing material from our new album, fan favorites, as well as celebrating the 30-year anniversary of Doomsday for the Deceiver,” promises Flotsam and Jetsam drummer Jason Bittner.

Bay Area thrash-metal newbies Hatchet will also be shredding at Whisky as Flotsam’s support act on the U.S. tour.

However, we have a much better suggestion: the Night Train and Roses thing!

On February 14, toast the evening with some Night Train while getting your faces rocked off by the sounds of Hollywood hit-makers Guns N’ Roses at local faves Hollywood Roses‘ headlining gig at the world-famous Whisky A Go-Go!

The Whisky is located in the heart of the Strip’s Rock Row at 8901 Sunset Boulevard at Clark Street. Get more details and tickets for Hollywood Roses’ Valentine’s Day show here.

But don’t blame us if the date starts to feel a little uncomfortable should the band break out “Used to Love Her”!

BEEN A LONG TIME SINCE YOU ROCK & ROLLED? GET SET TO SHOUT AT THE DEVIL & DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY ONCE AGAIN!

Not enough metal in your summer? Bummed about the closing of Rock Row landmark Hollywood SoundCheck? Disappointed by the lack of classic metal bands in the SSMF 2014 lineup? Don’t fret. A good mix of hard rockin’ fan bands is coming to a stage near you to save your end-of-summer partying.

Motley Inc.On September 12, a hard rocking trio of cover bands paying homage to three of the biggest rock groups in history–Van Halen, Bon Jovi and Motley Crue–will set their amps to 11 and rattle the roof of House of Blues Anaheim. Giving L.A. rock fans a good reason to make the commute over to The O.C. is Atomic Punks, the L.A. Music Awards-winning tribute band whose spot-on covers of early VH tracks has made fans out of metal aficionados like Bret Michaels and Howard Stern; Crue-worshipping rockers Motley Inc.; and Wanted, which will attempt to rock a million–or a couple hundred–faces with scorchin’ renditions of Bon Jovi’s runaway hits. Get tickets and additional details here.

Molly RingwaldsThe next night, on September 13, head over to House of Blues Sunset for a trip back to the awesome ’80s with Brit band The Molly Ringwalds. The costumed cover rockers’ roster of retro rock and pop classics generally includes tunes by Sunset Strip icons like Guns N’ Roses, The Go-Gos, Motley Crue and Poison. Timeless tracks by Eighties metal monsters like Twisted Sister and Whitesnake also often wind their way into The Molly Ringwalds’ set list. And considering that these cover rockers are from Sheffield, England, you can expect to hear some anthemic hits from the group’s hometown heroes, Def Leppard.

pyromaniaWanna get rocked? The Whisky A Go Go is the spot to head to on September 16, when fellow Def Leppard lovers Pyromania takes center stage as headliners of the return of AXS TV’s concert show The World’s Greatest Tribute Bands. Get more details and free tickets here.

Stroll the Sunset Strip east the following week and hit up House of Blues Sunset for a night of good times, rad times when Led Zeppelin 2 cranks up its amps on September 25. Winding down its national tour through America, the Chicago-based band sticks so close to Zeppelin’s repertoire that you can expect to get a contact high just by watching. It’s also why Metallica guitar legend Kirk Hammet has publicly declared, “These guys sound fucking exactly like Led Zeppelin!”

Robert Trujillo

ROBERT TRUJILLO TO REUNITE WITH MASS MENTAL AUG. 26

mass-mental-whiskyMetallica bassist Robert Trujillo is keeping good on a promise made earlier this summer and is heading back to the Sunset Strip to rock the Whisky A Go Go with a reunited Mass Mental on August 26.

The all-ages show will feature Trujillo once again jamming with his funky, pre-Metallica, art-rock bandmates: vocalist Benji Webbe, bassist Armand Sabal-Lecco and drummer Ken Schalk.

Making the historic heavy metal experience even more cool is the addition of guest vocalist Whitfield Crane of Ugly Kid Joe.

The L.A. show is a warm-up gig for Mass Mental’s September 6 slot at Germany’s Warwick Open Day music fest.

HARD ROCK HOLIDAY!

KIX IS GONNA KICK OUT THE CLASSICS AT WHISKY’S NEW YEAR’S EVE BASH, DEC. 31!

Get ready to get your fuse blown with some hard-rockin’ classic metal when the world-famous Whisky A Go-Go brings Kix to the Sunset Strip for a special New Year’s Eve show on December 31.

The Maryland-launched metal monsters that scored a number of unforgettable hard rock classics disbanded in the mid-’90s for nearly a decade before reuniting and resurfacing in 2012 with the concert album Live in Baltimore. More recently, Kix was one of the last bands to ever play the now defunct Sunset Strip landmark Key Club when they headlined a show last March.

Now, with their return to the Sunset Strip with the Whisky’s December 31 show, frontman Steve Whiteman and the band are ready to start rockin’ like Dokken with powerhouse hits like “Blow My Fuse,” “Cold Blood” and the most awesome heavy metal power ballad next to “Home Sweet Home”: the badass anti-suicide song “Don’t Close Your Eyes.”

Foxy Florida-based hard rockers Siren is opening the New year’s Eve show, and the band’s Zeppelin/Maiden-inspired grooves are also worth checking out. Whisky A Go-Go is located in the heart of Rock Row at 8901 Sunset Blvd. at Clark St., the crossroads where American rock n’ roll history was launched! Can’t wait to get Kix-ed in the cabeza with some hard-rocking authentic old-school metal on December 31!

WHISKY SERVES UP DOUBLE SHOT OF METAL WITH HOLLYWOOD ROSES & MOTLEY TOO

a7f8f-hr-axlSure, it’s been awhile since Guns N’ Roses and Motley Crue played the Sunset Strip. But if you have enough Night Train Express and head to the Whisky A Go-Go tonight, you, like Bowling for Soup, may be able to drift back to 19, 19 1985!

Perhaps the the next best thing to a real Guns/Motley double-bill, local legends Hollywood Roses (right) and Motley Too (below) will be visiting the Whisky tonight to do a little dancing with Mr. Browntstone and shouting at the Devil while keeping the spirit of Sunset strip-launched heavy metal alive!

SoCal rockers Never Justified, who cite GN’R as a key influence, along with Foo Fighters, Zeppelin and Slash, are also on the bill and making the Saturday night event the band’s record release showcase for Never Justified’s debut EP.

Also set to hit the Whisky stage tonight, Sept. 14, is OC Bay, a local duo delivering original tunes and familiar covers. Get more deets here.

Maiden L.A.

PAUL DI’ANNO, THE ‘KILLER’ VOICE THAT LAUNCHED IRON MAIDEN, IS SET TO COVER THE ICONIC METAL BAND’S EARLY CLASSICS AT THE WHISKY JAN. 20

killersIf you were too stoned in the late ’70s/early ’80s or are one of those youngins who didn’t know that iconic British metal band Iron Maiden had a badass frontman before Bruce Dickinson, you should make a New Year’s resolution now to check out Paul Di’Anno at the Sunset Strip’s world-famous Whisky A Go Go on January 20.

Before Dickinson first rocked the mic for Maiden on 1982’s groundbreaking heavy metal masterpiece The Number of the Beast, and just after the band’s first two vocalists, Paul Day and Dennis Wilcock, bailed, Di’Anno fronted Maiden from 1978 through 1981 and managed to crank out a small but awesomely impressive collection of albums. Before rock and roll debauchery and personality conflicts within Maiden led to Di’Anno and the band parting ways, he set the foundation for Iron Maiden’s success with the now-classic albums Iron Maiden and Killers and the live EP Maiden Japan.

beast-singing-with-iron-maiden-drugs-groupies-whole-paul-dianno-paperback-cover-artDi’Anno released his memoir, The Beast, in 2010 and has forged ahead as a solo artist as well as a frontman for various hard-rock bands, including Praying Mantis, Battlezone and Killers.

More recently, Di’Anno has signed on as a special guest vocalist on ex-Ozzy Osbourne Band shredder Jake E. Lee‘s upcoming solo album, due in 2013.

Aside from Lee’s project, the singer hasn’t released new material since Battlezone’s 2001 album Cessation of Hostilities. Di’Anno did, however, release a cool compilation of his early work with his famous former band on the 2010 collection The Early Iron Maiden Songbook.

All things considered, it sounds like Di’Anno’s Whisky show on January 20, which is part of his worldwide “Running Free Again Tour,” is going to be a very loud and awesome sonic stroll down memory lane during his Iron Maiden years.

We can’t think of a more rockin’ way to reminisce. Get details on the Whisky show here.

AEROSMITH AND WHISKY SERVED ON SUNSET

SAMSUNGWe were stoked recently while rolling the Sunset Strip and randomly stumbling upon iconic band Aerosmith rockin’ the Whisky A Go-Go — even if it was only via huge posters that cover the exterior walls of the equally legendary rock club. Spotting the awesome art hyping the band’s latest release, Music from Another Dimension, put a whole new rock and roll swagger in our walk.

BIG B TAKES A BREAK FROM RECORDING NEW ALBUM TO HEADLINE THE WHISKY DEC. 27

The Whisky A Go-Go has the perfect remedy for anyone trying to shake those lame holiday songs outta their cabeza by bringing rap-rock renegade Bryan “Big B” Mahoney to the Strip on December 27 for an all-ages show.

Big BBig B has been active lately, tweeting about the progress he’s making on his long-awaited follow-up to last year’s stellar breakthrough Music for Misfits, his seventh and unarguably best studio release in an already impressive arsenal.

If the Upland-born performer’s Whisky visit is even half as awesome as his Viper Room stint last November, it should be a smokin’ show — and even better if Big B decides to debut some new tunes.

Get ticket info. for the December 27 Whisky show, which kicks off at 7:30 p.m., here.

Meet The Kavanaghs

AFTER STEALING THE SPOTLIGHT AT CULTURE COLLIDE, ARGENTINA’S THE KAVANAGHS ARE SET TO ROCK THE WHISKY OCTOBER 13

So, what do four guys from Argentina who were raised on equal parts Beatles, Beach Boys and Badfinger know about playing authentic powerhouse British and American rock?

Well, as Rosario-based band The Kavanaghs proved at L.A.’s Culture Collide music fest this past weekend, a helluva lot!

In fact, when it comes to music, these guys speak the language loud and clear, effortlessly infusing Sixties Brit and American classic rock stylings around memorable original English-language songs that reinvent contemporary rock and roll without disrespecting its past.

The quartet was part of Culture Collide’s four-day (Oct. 4-7) multi-bill lineup of some of the best new bands from around the world. And all that global creative energy and vast array of music styles combusted in an amp-shaking showcase of great sets by an eclectic mix of artists that included Sweden’s Icona Pop, Britain’s The Wombats, Poland’s Coldair and New Orleans’ Royal Teeth, which had the parking lot packed and jumping along to its groovy set.

However, it was The Kavanaghs’ rockin’ show on Sunday that won the weekend.

The band — frontman/bassist Tiago Galindez, drummer Sebastian Cairo and guitarists Alejandro Pin and Diego Vazquez — ripped through a tight set of tunes from its first two albums, including the stellar summer release Love Conquers Pain.

The cool rush of fast and furious tracks like “That’s All You Need to Know,” the badass Beatles-esque anthem “Friday On My Mind” and the addictive “Need a Pity Day” filled the room at Taix with a steady stream of curious indie-music fans that danced and nodded their heads straight through to the stellar set closer, “Tonight,” the first single from Love.

Los Angeles rock fans get another opportunity to catch the band’s killer live show, at the world-famous Whisky A Go-Go on October 13, before the band heads back to Argentina to record its next album.

Cruefest is not only a great night of rock for a cool Crue-approved cause, it also always draws out some very cool guests. Ratt‘s Stephen Pearcy, original GN’R drummer Steven Adler and L.A. GunsTracii Guns made it to last year’s event. Plus, Cruefest also offers a chance to collect some cool rock gear via auctions and raffles, including signed Crue art.
